In 1874, a comet lit up the sky over Iowa. We called this comet the Coggia comet, and it gave an intellectually ambitious Iowa teachers some ideas. She began a project that would last nearly a decade, and culminated in her solar system quilt. The original quilt is seven by eight feet and detailed with moons orbiting their planets, embroidered stars, and silk blaze. Baker seems to have found inspiration in astronomer Maria Mitchell (who has a namesake comet herself), who wrote: “The eye that directs a needle in the delicate meshes of embroidery, will equally well bisect a star with the spider web of the micrometer." Another inspiration for her masterwork may have been the classroom illustrations of Orra White Hitchcock.
Created for cuddles, this soft fleece blanket adds soothing warmth to any cold day. Made from 100% silky soft, double-needle, polyester fabric that is trimmed with a flat-folded edge. This features an anti-pill finish and is machine-washable, so no worries about needing it specially cleaned.
