The book eventually made it onto the list of subversive literature, leading up to WWII, and would've been subject in its day to the book burnings of the Nazi Party, in Germany. Illustrations in the word were contributed Alfred Rubin, and contributors to the collection included: Heinrich Mann, Frédéric Boutet, Gustav Meyrink, Edgar Allan Poe, J.P. Jacobsen, and E.T.A. Hoffmann. It's also known for having one of the most beautifully designed covers in early 20th centory horror, featuring a bat carrying a skull. And it's perfect for housing your own spooky TBR.
