Aubrey Beardsley produced some of the most iconic illustrations of the early 20th century, and is most widely known for his work in Oscar Wilde's 'Salome.' His career spanned only seven short years before his death to tuberculosis, but during that time, he became known for his fabulously controversial, androgynous, and imaginative illustrations. All of his work was marked by both his sensibilities in light and shadow, and his signature sense of surreal humor. His fascination with the grotesque and bizarre in everyday life made him both beloved and reviled by the public, during the early days of Art Nouveau, and the end of the Victorian period.
