We take infographics for granted today, but once upon a time, they weren't so common. Emma Willard's (1787–1870) pioneering work laid the groundwork for the charts and graphs of today. This is her masterwork. While others had designed timelines, hers was the first to truly give time a perspective - presenting the Biblical creation as the vanishing point of an architectural perspective of a classical temple, and working her way out to the then-modern era, depicting how we perceive the passing of time. She described this depiction as allowing students to see time in the sense of rising and falling civilizations - what she described as an ancestry of nations. Willard was also a very notable feminist of her day, pushing hard for educational opportunities for women. Most famously, she taught at the Troy Female Seminary, and incorporated "masculine studies," of science and history into the curriculum, once seen as too challenging or too useless for women. NB!
