George Mayerle was a German optometrist (and member of the American Optometric Association) living in San Fransisco, during the turn of the 20th century. During this time, optometry was still young, and just beginning to come into its own, and become a well-respected field in its own right. Mayerle's contributions to the burgeoning field (and his patients' eyes) were many, but he's primarily remembered for this innovative eye chart. What's so interesting about an eye exam? For optometrists, plenty - his design was originally two-sided (one positive, one negative), and combined four distinct examinations into a single chart - for a total of 8 exams in a single diagnostic aid. And it's a beautiful chart in its own right, originally hand-lettered by Mayerle.
